Reiki does not take the place of a licensed professional physician's care, but complements medical treatment and, in many instances, helps accelerate the healing process.
Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a method of natural healing. Reiki is a Japanese word for "universal life force" or energy. Reiki is a system for channeling that energy to someone for the purpose of healing.
In a rapidly changing world that inundates and overwhelms us with information and stimuli at rates and volumes never before imagined, we all are experiencing higher levels of stress and associated illness. Reiki provides a natural method to return balance, reduce stress and improve the quality of our lives.
Reiki was discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui. Dr. Usui was born in 1865 in Kyoto Japan. He studied Buddhism as a child on Mt. Karuma. In 1914, Dr. Usui went to Mt. Karuma to meditate and was initiated to the Reiki Energy. This is where he rediscovered Reiki.
He then founded a healing clinic in Japan where he treated thousands of people. He initiated 2000 practitioners and 16 Reiki Masters several of whom have been instrumental in the global adoption and acceptance of Reiki as a natural healing system.
One of these Reiki Masters was Mrs. Hawayo Takata who introduced Reiki to the West. She was born in December 1900 on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. Her parents were Japanese immigrants. In 1936 she received her first Degree Reiki initiation. In 1938 while in Hawaii, Dr. Hayashi initiated Mrs. Takata as a Reiki Master. Mrs. Takata initiated many practitioners' and 22 masters. She died in 1980.
Dr. Hayashi, a retired naval officer, was another influential student of Dr. Usui from whom he received the Reiki Master initiation in 1925 at the age of 47. Before Dr. Usui transitioned, he asked Dr. Hayashi to accept the responsibility of preserving Reiki so that it would not be lost as it had been in the past. Dr. Hayashi accepted this responsibility.
Dr. Hayashi went on to develop the Usui system of healing. He opened a Reiki clinic in Tokyo and kept detailed records of the treatments given. He used this information to create the standard hand positions, the system of three degrees and their initiation procedures.
